Cellist Jo Quail’s music is original, powerful, seductive, soulful and inspiring. Jo is a fearless and innovative player with a formidable stage presence, engaging effortlessly with her listeners from behind her electric Starfish cello and exhibiting complete control over the looping and effects technology which is at her disposal. Jo’s pieces often build from the simplest of figures into magnificently captivating soundscapes that never lose their sense of proportion or purpose, merging sublime melodies with unstoppable rhythms, equally comfortable exploring complex harmonies and freeform improvisation. In the current climate of style versus substance, Jo’s music follows its own singular path.
British cellist and composer Jo Quail is returning to Australia during June and July 2018
Fresh from the 2016 triumph by playing to a sold out Salon at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Jo Quail will be available for presenting her works for solo electric cello, using looping and effects to bring her magnificent soundscapes to audiences in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Hobart. (The Salon sold out three weeks before the show).
"Jo Quail is an outstanding master of her subject during the evening concert. With great musical intensity, sound range and color, she presents her pieces. She plucks, knocks, bats and strokes the sides of the electric cello. Her music arouses wanderlust, longing, speaks of love and grief, breathes silence and vastness, takes with you, lets dreams dream, and spaces for your own imagination. Jo Quail dominates the delicate graceful tones as well as the powerful ones. She is a virtuoso, eliciting tones that are hard to guess. Putting her music in a drawer is not easy."
